Climate Ethics
Student Essays

The following essays were written by students of the seminar "Introduction to Climate Ethics" (Dr. Alexander Schulan). Climate Ethics deals with moral questions related to anthropogenic climate change.
The seminar started with utilitarianism and deontological ethics in the context of climate change. Afterwards, the students focused on the moral problems of climate change, i. e. why it is difficult to apply our common morality to climate change. Other important questions which were part of the seminar are for example, why do we have to act to mitigate climate change, how much do we owe to future generations to restore intergenerational justice and who is responsible to pay today to restore intragenerational justice. During the seminar, the group also reasoned on interesting issues in climate ethics like geoengineering, the precautionary principle and the discounting of future climate damages.
