Knowledge about renewable energies is unevenly distributed. While solar and wind energy are widely known and accepted, there is significantly less awareness about geothermal energy, particularly deep geothermal energy. Homeowners may encounter shallow geothermal systems, as these can be installed in family homes, giving them a basic understanding of this technology. However, deep geothermal energy, which is employed in large-scale projects for entire cities, remains relatively unknown to the general public. Deep geothermal energy will play a crucial role in achieving CO2 neutrality, especially in the city of Munich. Therefore, education about deep geothermal energy is essential to increase public awareness and acceptance of this technology.
Science education is crucial in nurturing curiosity and understanding across all age groups. It equips individuals with knowledge leading to critical thinking skills and enables, in this way, informed decision-making. Effective science teaching involves engaging methods that simplify complex concepts, making them accessible and interesting to learners. There are numerous interdisciplinary approaches to educating the public and a multifaceted strategy is essential to reach the widest audience possible. In addition to, for example, educational films, public panel discussions, or informative websites, one effective method can be the use of children's books.
Children's books can be a powerful tool for communicating scientific ideas as they blend storytelling with educational content, detailed pictures and relatable characters. By introducing topics like geothermal energy in an age-appropriate manner, children's books foster awareness and understanding of environmentally friendly technologies for children and parents.
