08.07.2016 – 09.07.2016

Workshop with Dr Mark Roseland (Director of the Centre for Sustainable Community Development, Simon Fraser University)

Roseland2

In a world where despair comes too easily, this workshop awakens our collective creativity. Dr Mark Roseland is Director of the Centre for Sustainable Community Development at Simon Fraser University and Professor of Planning in SFU's School of Resource and Environmental Management. He lectures internationally, advises communities and governments on sustainable development policy and planning, and has been cited as one of Canada's leading public intellectuals. His book Toward Sustainable Communities has been called "the most significant book of its kind" (ICLEI) and "a treasure for policymakers, planners, thought leaders and anyone working to shape the future of our communities" (Portland Sustainability Institute). Join us for this inspiring workshop. You will leave with new ideas and with new ways to bring those ideas into practice.

Mark Roseland suggested the following structure for interested students:

Day One morning (09:00-13:45): introductions, lecture and discussion – focus on theory, with examples

Day One afternoon (14:30-18:00): site visit or walking tour; small group exercises – selecting cases for application of theory

Day Two morning (09:00-12:00): small group work – attempts to apply theory to practice

Day Two afternoon (13:00-17:00): small group presentations and final plenary discussion – from practice back to theory
