We were fortunate to be able to ask the farmer exactly why he mows this area for hay but not the adjacent field—he confirmed the distinction described by Tobi Schiefer between Streuwiesen (wet meadow mown once annually, a protected habitat for ground-nesting birds) and Heuwiesen (dry meadow mown for fodder). On 3–5 June 2015, a dozen students from the Environmental Studies program participated in the second place-based workshop. They were taught how to read landscapes using different methods (geology, ecology, ethics, and environmental history) at Benediktbeuern's Zentrum für Umwelt und Kulture at Kochel-am-See. The workshop featured an interdisciplinary faculty and professional team of teachers including Carson Fellow Hal Crimmel, Professor Anke Friedrich (LMU, Geology), Professor Markus Vogt (LMU, Kath. Theologie), City of Munich ecologist Tobi Schiefer, Dorothea Hutterer (LMU, ES Program), and Director of Academic Programs Rob Emmett.
