Susanne B. Unger joined the Rachel Carson Center as lecturer and coordinator of the Environmental Studies Certificate Program (ESCP) in fall 2023. A linguistic anthropologist by training, she is particularly interested in human-animal relationships and in multispecies research. She holds a BA in gender studies and psychology from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, USA, an MA in linguistic anthropology from the University of Toronto, Canada, and a PhD in linguistic anthropology along with a graduate certificate in film, television, and media from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, USA. Prior to joining the Rachel Carson Center, she taught anthropology at The College of William & Mary, USA; Duke University, USA; Kenyon College, USA; and The American University in Washington, DC, USA. From 2021 to 2023, she worked as a teaching associate at ProLehre Media and Didactics at Technical University Munich. Having worked in academic publishing for several years, she still occasionally works as a freelance editor and translator of scholarly texts. She also regularly produces documentary audio pieces on environmental issues for a German language radio show and podcast. In her work, she draws on and combines an anthropological lens, a documentary approach, a passion for environmental issues and for teaching, and a love for sharing stories with audiences in academia and beyond.
