Bernadette Pest

Certificate Student
Film and Media Culture Studies

Bernadette strives to take an interdisciplinary and international approach to her work. After
completing a degree in international business, she began a bachelor of arts in theatre studies
and communication science at LMU Munich. She also took classes in gender studies during a
semester at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Based on Judith Butler’s approach
Bernadette’s bachelor thesis included a large-scale survey in the cosplay community, which
led to insights about gender norms and gender performativity.
Bernadette believes in the importance of rethinking binary concepts not only in terms of
gender but also when it comes to nature/culture or animal/human. Therefore, she focuses on
gender, animal studies and ecocriticism in her current master’s program film and media
culture studies (LMU). Convinced that every living being has intrinsic value, she spoke at a
conference about how fantasy movies can promote a less anthropocentric view. Bernadette
is excited about broadening her knowledge at the RCC and taking a closer look at connecting
science with the humanities
